Texas Instruments (TI) introduced RF Transceiver ICs for ultra-low power RF applications with the CC2511F16RSP, a single-chip transceiver in the Sub-1 Ghz space. This chip has a 32-bit RISC-based microcontroller core, low power RF transceiver, and peripheral support inside a System-in-Package. It is designed for end products that require low duty cycle and extended battery life, allowing longer operating time with fewer battery charge cycles. As a result, the CC2511F16RSP is well-suited for the Internet of Things (IoT) market space, including solutions such as point-of-sale (POS) systems, alarms/security, asset tracking, and many more applications that require long range communication and low power operation.

The CC2511F16RSP offers ample output power along with low current consumption, a due to a large 5mm2 die size and therefore higher power efficiency. It provides up to +8 dBm output power, which provides longer range, more reliable links. The chip also features a high performance superheterodyne receiver with an LNA and variable gain IF stages to improve performance in noisy environments. The RX root-mean-square (RMS) noise figure is 1.3 dB or better at 300 KHz bandwidths with greater than 60 dB blocking selectivity.

This transceiver IC also contains a 32-bit RISC-based microcontroller core that provides code efficiency and other processing power improvements allowing more complex tasks to be completed. The processor can be used for a variety of tasks, such as radio control, encryption, and data manipulation. The on-chip memory includes 32K bytes of program memory, 32K bytes of on-chip RAM, 4K bytes of data EEPROM, and 4K bytes of register RAM.

The CC2511F16RSP also includes an internal low power oscillator and a 12 MHz external crystal to provide time-of-flight capability and eliminate the need for an external clock. The chip also features an on-chip voltage regulator, an on-chip DC/DC converter, and an on-chip open-loop inductor regulator. This allows for minimal external component requirements and efficient power management.

The low power capabilities of the CC2511F16RSP allows for extended battery life in low duty cycle applications. The chip has a computed “sleep time” of 100 us with a wakeup time of 7 ms. It is capable of operating at just 3.3 mA in receive mode, and 5.5 mA in transmit mode at maximum output power. It can reach a peak sensitivity of -122 dBm in sensitivity mode with a Rx current of just 2 mA. Additionally, the active current in receive mode is substantially lower than in transmit mode making it suitable for low duty cycle applications.

The CC2511F16RSP offers numerous benefits in the RF Transceiver IC space, from the built-in 32-bit RISC processor, to the low power and extended battery life of the chip. It is ideal for building small, low power devices that are suited for the IoT market. Its design also allows for minimal external component requirements, and an extremely low current consumption in receive mode.
