The CDLL6489 is a single Zener diode which is designed to provide voltage protection in conditions of electrical transients and small overvoltage. Working Principle

The CDLL6489 works by using the Zener breakdown principle. This means that when the voltage across the diode reaches its Zener voltage (around 5V for the CDLL6489), it allows the current to flow in the forward direction. The reason behind this is because when the voltage reaches the Zener voltage, the valence bands of the semiconductor material become aligned and the current is able to pass through the diode. This effect is called “avalanche breakdown”, as it is similar to an avalanche effect in which the current multiplies rapidly and can cause the voltage to rise significantly. The CDLL6489 also has an in-built resistor which is used to prevent too much current from flowing through the diode.
