Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are devices used to protect circuits from voltage or current surges, such as those caused by lightning. The CG2230MS is a specific type of GDT known as a metal-oxide surge arrester and is used predominately in applications related to the telecommunications sector. Its designed working principle is based on the highly conductive nature of metals at high voltage levels.

When an unprotected device is subjected to a pressure wave created by a connectivity, the resistance of the internal metal-oxide arrester lowers and creates a large electrical current.
