Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are electrical devices that protect systems from power surges, lightning strikes, and other forms of power issues. They work by limiting or diverting the flow of electrical current should an over-voltage arise. GDTs are usually constructed using combinations of metal oxide varistors, conducting spacers, and gas tubes filled with either sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) or nitrous oxide (N2O). The GDT also features a surge-limiting principle that prevents repeated over-voltages from entering the protected system. This is done by limiting the maximum current flow through the conductors inside the GDT. These components turn on instantly when the threshold voltage is exceeded, ensuring that normal voltage levels are maintained in the protected system.
In addition to its surge-limiting principle, the CG2250SN GDT also features a secondary protection mechanism known as varistor protection. A varistor is a voltage-dependent resistor that has a non-linear response to current. When the voltage in the system exceeds a certain threshold, the varistor will reduce the voltage by providing an electrical impedance. This impedance prevents the over-voltage from reaching the protected system, ensuring normal operating conditions.
The CG2250SN GDT also includes a fault-indication system. This system is designed to provide a visual indication of overloads and other fault conditions by illuminating an LED on the device. It also includes an interrupting device, which is used to cut off the power supply from the device in the event of an overload or other fault condition. This ensures that the protected system is not damaged by the power surge.
The CG2250SN GDT is a versatile device suitable for a range of applications, including grounding and surge protection for AC systems. Thanks to its surge-limiting and varistor protection mechanisms, it provides a reliable means of protecting systems from electrical surges and other power issues.
