Working Principle

CHL8318-20-04CR is a Buck DC-DC switching controller, which converts an input voltage to a predetermined output voltage. The input voltage is higher than the output voltage. The circuit is capable of operating with a wide input voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V, and the output voltage can be programmed to a level ranging between 0.8V and 3.3V.

This voltage regulator works by using an integrated Power MOSFET placed between the input and the output. The MOSFET is turned ON and OFF by switching it with a gate control signal generated from an internal control circuit. The integrated control circuit controls the gate based on the values of an internal Error Amplifier, which compares the output voltage of this regulator to a reference voltage.

When the output voltage rises above the reference voltage, the control circuit reduces the duty cycle of the gate signal, thereby lowering the amount of power delivered to the output (Figure 1). When the output voltage falls below the reference voltage, the control circuit increases the duty cycle of the gate signal, thereby increasing the power delivered to the output. In this way, the output voltage is accurately maintained at the predetermined value.

The switching frequency of the voltage regulator can be programmed depending on needs. The low quiescent current of 10uA and the programmable switching frequency of 500kHz to 2.4MHz make CHL8318-20-04CR highly efficient for battery powered applications. The short-circuit protection also ensures safety. All in all, CHL8318-20-04CR is an ideal voltage regulator for high-efficiency and safe power management solutions in mobile and other battery-powered applications.
