CHL8318-20-04CRT is a high performance DC-DC switching controller developed by ON Semiconductor. It is part of the PMIC Voltage Regulators DC DC Switching Controllers family. The CHL8318-20-04CRT provides high output current of up to 4A, fast transient response, high accuracy and power saving features, making it ideal for a wide range of voltage regulation and battery protection applications.

The CHL8318-20-04CRT\'s two main components are its single-ended PWM controller and its dual-output synchronous rectifier. The single-ended PWM controller consists of a comparator, control logic and a digital-controlled oscillator. It is responsible for generating the PWM output signals with a selectable switching frequency to drive the synchronous rectifier. The dual-output synchronous rectifier consists of the synchronous rectifier, the power supply current detection circuit, short-circuit protection circuit and the input voltage overshoot protection circuit.

The functioning of the CHL8318-20-04CRT relays on 3 main operational modes, namely the Constant Voltage Mode, Constant Current Mode and the Power Saving Mode.

The Constant voltage mode is used for applications of charging batteries, providing power to circuits and power supplies that require stable voltage at the output. In this mode, the PWM algorithm works to ensure the output voltage stays within the programmed voltage range and the load current is provided based on the input voltage and the programmed output voltage.

The Constant Current mode is used for applications of supplying current to circuits and batteries. In this mode, the PWM algorithm works to ensure that the output current is within the programmed output current range and the voltage will be adjusted to ensure the output current is regulated.

The Power Saving Mode is used to reduce quiescent current operation. In this mode, when the output voltage reaches the steady state, the PWM algorithm will switch off the internal switching circuitry and put the controller into a power saving mode.

The CHL8318-20-04CRT is widely used in wide range of voltage regulation and battery protection applications such as portable chargers, laptop computers, cell phones, digital cameras and portable multi-voltage applications.
