Optoisolators, also known as optocouplers, are devices used to transfer electrical signals between two different circuits isolated from one another. One of the most common types of optoisolators is the Transistor-Photovoltaic Output Optoisolator (CNY17-1X016). An input signal placed in the transistor is converted to a voltage output by means of a photodiode, which is then coupled to a high-impedance optocoupler-isolated output circuit.

The CNY17-1X016 Optoisolator consists of a photodiode embedded in an optically isolated plastic housing; the housing also contains two LEDs, two phototransistors, and two emitter-follower circuits. The housing is typically designed in a package with an 8-pin dual-in-line configuration (DIP). The package is usually covered with an additional plastic sleeve for additional protection against damage from environmental factors, as well as from components within other circuits.

The CNY17-1X016 Optoisolator works by taking the input signal from the minicontroller or logic device placed in the transistor circuit, and converting it to a voltage output. The output from the photodiode is then coupled to the high-impedance optocoupler-isolated output circuit, which enables it to be used and read by a microcontroller or other logic device. This conversion of an input signal to a voltage output is known as “optically coupling” the signal into the output circuit.

In addition, the CNY17-1X016 Optoisolator is designed to provide superior noise immunity, making it an ideal choice for applications in which noise immunity is especially important. This is accomplished by using a very high-resistance shunt resistor between the optoisolator’s photodiode and output, which effectively limits the amount of noise that can travel through the circuit.
