Optoisolators are used in a wide variety of applications to provide isolation. The CNY171VM photovoltaic output solid state opto-isolator is designed to provide a logic-level interface between circuits of widely different potentials. It features two pairs of emitter-detector elements which are optically coupled to provide voltage isolation and minimal current transfer. The CNY171VM acts as an analog switch with high isolation rated at 5 kV, giving it a wide range of application areas, from motor control and medical equipment, to measuring and controlling in industrial and aircraft applications. It is also used in industrial automation, robotics, photonics, and communication systems.

The CNY171VM consists of a detector and a logicgate integrated circuit that acts as a voltage regulator. The detector consists of two sets of paired LEDs and photodiodes, one side for the signal and the other side for confirmation. The signal LEDs are lighted when the signal is ‘high’ and the confirm LEDs are lighted when the signal is ‘low’. When the detector side receives a signal, either ‘high’ or ’low’, current will flow to the gates of the output transistors. The voltage at the gate determines the state of the output transistor, either ‘on’ or ‘off’.

The isolation between the input and the output of the CNY171VM is achieved through the use of optical coupling.Optical coupling works by using infrared LEDs to transmit the signal from one side of the device to another. The infrared light is converted to electrical current by a photodiode, which in turn is converted to digital logic. This type of optical isolation provides a physical barrier that prevents unwanted noise, as well as electrical isolation between two circuits.
