optoisolators, sometimes known as optocouplers, are special components used to isolate electrical signals between circuits. They isolate the input control signal from an output response, so the signal can be transmitted or detected without a direct connection or potential interference. It\'s important to use an optoisolator when the signals crossing from one system to another have very different power levels or potentials, or when electrical isolation is needed for safety reasons.

The CNY171W is a transistor, photovoltaic output optoisolator manufactured by Sharp, that isolates a signal connected to its input terminal, optically couples it to its output terminal via a phototransistor, and then drives the output, without causing an electrical connection to the input signal.

The CNY171W is equipped with an infrared emitting diode (IRED) and a photosensor that convert electrical signals into optical signals. The input current of the IRED (IIN) is limited by the anode resistor, in order to obtain control of the optoisolator’s output characteristics. The IRED light emitted from the device is then received by the phototransistor’s photosensitive surface. The collector voltage of the phototransistor is then transferred to the output terminal of the CNY171W.

The working circuits of the CNY171W are reactively driven, which enhances the output stability. The CNY171W isolates a signal connected to its input terminal and then optically couples it to its output terminal. Again, the output is driven with no electrical connection being made to the input signal. Its open collector output is fully comporable to TTL logic levels, but should not be used to drive TTL circuitry directly.

The CNY171W is particularly well suited for applications that require a fast response and reliable operation, such as computer interfaces, process control systems, and robotics control systems. It enables signals to cross from one circuit to another by isolating each circuit from each other, thus preventing unwanted leakage currents and interference.
