CNY172SM Application Field and Working PrincipleThe CNY172SM is a fast current transfer optoisolator made by TE Connectivity, often used in telecommunications, computing, and other automated systems. It comprises of a photodiode, two transistors, and an LED (light emitting diode) encased in an hermetically sealed, 8-lead surface mount package. The basic operating principle involves the LED being illuminated with current, which causes photons to be released in the form of light. This light is then detected by the photodiodes, which produce an electrical current in response. This electrical current is then amplified by the two transistors, and outputted at the optoisolator’s output port.In addition to its highly reliable current transfer capabilities, the CNY172SM also provides several other impressive features, such as high surge current capability, current transfer ratio of 0.45 minimum, and guaranteed high isolation resistance (free from internal arcing) for up to 50 years. It also provides a wide open-collector voltage, with a maximum of 7.5 volts, making it suitable for most operating conditions. Furthermore, the CNY172SM is designed with an inherent reverse polarity protection feature, preventing damage from incorrect wiring.
