Thyristors are unidirectional semiconductor switches which are used to control current, voltage and power in circuits. The Thyristor family includes SCRs, Triacs, Diacs, and MOSFETs. TRIACs (Trioduct Alternating Current Switches) are two-way switches for controlling AC circuits. They are designed to control the current in both directions, act as a bidirectional switch. The gate is used to regulate the current flow in both directions, and is connected to an external circuit that detects the flow of current, and as a result opens or closes the TRIAC as needed. The gate configuration is a prime feature of the TRIAC as it can easily be adjusted to open and close multiple times per second in order to respond instantly to changing current demands. The triac can also remain open even when the gate current is removed.
