Introduction to TRIACs

Triacs are a three-terminal semiconductor device which is a variation of a thyristor and belongs to the electronic switch family. Triacs are commonly used for switching, phase control and dimming of high-voltage AC power. Triacs are especially useful for applications where AC sources must be activated in the same fashion.

The Structure of TRIACs

The TRIAC consists of two opposing PN junctions with two main semiconductor regions each. The two main regions of the TRIAC are called main terminal 1 (MT1) and main terminal 2 (MT2). The gate voltage must be maintained above the “holding voltage” in order for the TRIAC to remain “on”.
