Introduction to TRIACs
Triacs are a three-terminal semiconductor device which is a variation of a thyristor and belongs to the electronic switch family. Triacs are commonly used for switching, phase control and dimming of high-voltage AC power. Triacs are especially useful for applications where AC sources must be activated in the same fashion.The Structure of TRIACs
The TRIAC consists of two opposing PN junctions with two main semiconductor regions each. The two main regions of the TRIAC are called main terminal 1 (MT1) and main terminal 2 (MT2). The main terminals are located at opposite ends of the device and can be distinguished by their colour codes. The third terminal is the gate terminal, which controls the electrical flow through the device. It is the only terminal that can be used to turn the device on or off.Operation of TRIACs
Unlike normal thyristors which only conduct in one direction, TRIACs can conduct in both directions, making them ideal for AC applications. When the gate of a TRIAC receives a positive voltage pulse, it will turn “on” and allow current to flow through the device. The gate must then be held at a positive voltage for current to keep flowing. This voltage is called the “holding voltage” and is usually around 1V.If the gate voltage is reduced or removed, the TRIAC will turn off, interrupting current flow. When this happens, the TRIAC is said to be in the “off state”. The gate voltage can then be used to turn the TRIAC back on again. The gate voltage must be maintained above the “holding voltage” in order for the TRIAC to remain “on”.Applications of TRIACs
The most common application of TRIACs is for power control. They are widely used in light dimmers, motor speed controls, and electric stove top lighters.
