The DC1796A-B Evaluation Boardfrom Texas Instruments is an analog to digital converter device and is designed to be used in applications ranging from data acquisition to instrumentation to industrial automation. Its versatile design, low power consumption, and accurate measurements make the DC1796A-B a reliable tool for any analog to digital conversion project. The DC1796A-B uses a complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) to achieve its accurate measurement results. This CMOS technology is the most common method for measuring voltage by quickly measuring the voltage differences between two or more points.

The DC1796A-B circuit board utilizes the ADC080-82 analog to digital converter. This converter is an 8-bit serial interface capable of converting up to 8 bits of analog information into a digital result. This digital result can be output in two distinct formats; the 8-bit binary form, or the two’s complement form. The two’s complement form is especially useful when dealing with signed values such as those encountered with a digital sampling application.

The design of the DC1796A-B allows for a range of complications to be addressed while avoiding the trade offs with accuracy and power draw that can occur between different data collection scenarios. The converter contains a voltage reference, allowing for accurate conversions and output readings regardless of the voltage on the input. This featured reference voltage is fused with the converter board itself, helping to reduce size and complexity, while still providing superior accuracy.

The DC1796A-B also includes an internal sample/hold circuit, an on board clock, and critical timing and protection features for reliable operations. For voltage input, the DC1796A-B features a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter core that allows for a maximum sampling rate of 1 MS/s. The converter can handle a wide range of applications and is capable of sampling up to 12 bits of resolution simultaneous with a maximum sampling rate of 8 MS/s. Furthermore, the DC1796A-B can provide resolution up to 16 bits when set to a sample rate lower than 8 MS/s.

The DC1796A-B is designed to meet the requirements of various industrial applications. It is specifications conform to JEDEC standard EIA/CAP requirements and include robust EMI/RFI shielding. The converter board can be used in both single-ended and differential ended configuration. With the differential ended configuration, the dynamic range is increased, allowing for higher operating resolution and accuracy.
