Evaluation and demonstration boards and kits have been part of the engineering toolkit for years. Examples range from simple switch-mode power supplies used in embedded MCU applications to higher power applications. As such, manufacturers of evaluation and development boards have begun to develop highly specialized, application-specific boards to meet the needs of a variety of different scenarios. The Texas Instruments DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM is just one such example.
The DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM is an Evaluation Module (EVM) specifically designed for use in network applications that require an interface between the Ethernet and a communications processor or microcontroller. The board includes all the necessary components to provide an interface between Ethernet networks and a system, including Ethernet Magnetics, RJ45 connectors, two LEDs, 5V DC Input jack and power jack. The onboard USB connector provides a physical layer interface between an external host and the device. This allows the user to access the device Configuration Panel for programming the device configuration registers. This panel can also be used to program the external memory connected to the DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM.
The DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM is designed for easy interfacing with external power sources. It includes a 5VDC input jack as well as power connector for powering the device. The board includes a voltage regulator that provides a 5VDC supply for the module and its peripherals. This voltage regulator has an input range of 4.6V-7V and can provide up to 400mA of current.
The DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM has an extensive range of peripherals including an on-board crystal oscillator, LEDs, and a reset switch. These onboard peripherals allow the user to quickly test and develop Ethernet applications without the need for an external controller.
