Magnetic sensors are devices designed to detect and measure magnetic fields. The DRV5053CAQLPGMQ1, specifically, is a magnetic linear Hall-effect switch integrated circuit (IC). This IC is used to detect a magnetic field perpendicular to it, and can be used for applications such as automotive fuel level sensing, platform and angle sensing, speed sensing, position sensing, and proximity sensing.
The DRV5053CAQLPGMQ1 is a small, low-cost CMOS Hall-effect sensor requiring no external magnetic target. It operates from a single supply voltage, and draws only 2µA Quiescent current. This IC is designed for a robust magnetic threshold detection over the operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C. The on-chip hysterisis provides a good switching jitter, noise immunity, and switch time response. The presence, direction, and intensity of the external magnetic field is detected by measuring the field-dependent Hall voltage.
The DRV5053CAQLPGMQ1 features an on-chip Zener diode that provides protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD) and reverse polarity protection, and can be directly connected to a microcontroller. This device operates on a single supply voltage range of 2.7V to 18V, and the output is a digital signal that is directly compatible to 5V logic gates, like the 74HC family, and indicates changes in the magnetic flux density.
The DRV5053CAQLPGMQ1 is a two-pin device. The Vcc pin supplies the power. The Output pin generates a digital signal in response to the change of the magnetic flux density. The IC is behaviorally equivalent to a Hall-effect switch. It operates as a latching Hall-effect switch for open-loop applications, and the output switches will latch even without power present.
The DRV5053CAQLPGMQ1 utilizes a Hall element to measure the strength and polarity of an external magnetic field. The object being sensed coming in contact with a magnetic field would produce a changing flux density. This is detected through the Hall element which is rectified and amplified, resulting in a voltage change proportional to the strength of the field. This linear distributed Hall element and flux concentrator is designed such that it is direction sensitive and has a bandpass characteristic. This bandpass characteristic allows the IC to pass signals with frequencies within the range of 50Hz to 400kHz.
The DRV5053CAQLPGMQ1 can be used for a variety of applications including automotive fuel level sensing, platform and angle sensing, speed sensing, position sensing, and proximity sensing. The IC can be used for proximity sensing applications by detecting a change in the Hall voltage when a magnetic object or source is in close proximity to the IC. When placed in an automotive fuel tank, the IC is able to detect the changes in the fuel level caused by fuel sloshing from side to side. This can be used to provide an accurate indication of the fuel level in the tank.
The DRV5053CAQLPGMQ1 has an on-chip hysterisis that provides a good switching jitter, noise immunity and switch time response. The IC utilizes a Hall element to measure the linear distributed Hall element and flux concentrator, making it direction sensitive and have a bandpass characteristic for frequencies from 50Hz to 400kHz.
