The DS1248WP-120 is a real-time clock (RTC) for use in applications requiring regular, accurate time keeping and event scheduling. Commonly used in electronics such as computers, network devices, and digital controls, the DS1248WP-120 provides accurate timing up to ±50ppm or ±1min/month at 25°C. The DS1248WP-120 also provides an on-chip, battery-backed NV RAM to store critical timekeeping and event data when power is lost.The DS1248WP-120 has a 32 kHz quartz crystal oscillator to maintain accuracy. This helps the device maintain time up to ±50ppm or ±1min/month at 25°C over the given battery life. Two main functions of the device are timekeeping and event scheduling. The primary cellular for timekeeping is a 32-bit counter, which is divisible by seconds, minutes, hours, days, days-of-week, months and years. The device also has an internal timer to generate an interrupt pulse known as the Timer Interrupt Request (TIRQ).The device supports two programmable alarms, Time-of-Day (TOD) and Date-of-Month (DOM). The TOD and DOM alarms can be used for event warning schedules, such as waking up an office computer in the morning, or having a system reset itself at a given time. The TOD and DOM interrupts are generated on a single pin where the user can handle them.The device also has a one- or two-byte programmable write protect feature protecting the clock chip settings against unauthorised changes. This feature can be enabled or disabled using a write command. This helps safeguard settings against erroneous changes when using the device in industrial or commercial settings.The DS1248WP-120 stores its data in Non-Volatile RAM (NV RAM), with up to 128 bytes of storage. This allows the user to store critical event data when power is lost. The DS1248WP-120 also provides a flexible interface for efficient communication between the device and the outside world. It supports a variety of communications protocols as well as both SOT-23/TDFN and SOIC packages.The DS1248WP-120 is a suitable device for a variety of applications where accurate, battery-backed timing is essential. It is commonly used in industrial and commercial settings for regular, periodic events, as well as for monitoring and setting alarms. The device can be used on its own, or linked with other devices to perform multiple operations simultaneously.
