DS1251W-120 is a “Real Time” (RTC) clock designed for applications that require accurate time and date information. The clock has a combination of advanced features, such as an enhanced menu of functions, an external battery backup supply and an up to 12-hour clock accuracy at 25°C. This particular device provides an easy to use 32-bit microcontroller based on the well-respected and reliable StrongARM processor architecture.

Working Principle
The DS1251W-120 uses a standard RTC ticking rate at 1 Hz with an accuracy of ±4.68 seconds per day, or ±11.20 minutes per month. It also has a very accurate 32 kHz frequency driven by a scaled-down temperature-dependent RC oscillator over the operating temperature range.
The device employs a modified binary-coded decimal (BCD) format, which provides for up to four years of date data. This format allows for up to 12 hour clock accuracy at 25°C, and also allows for single address accesses of the RTC counter values. The RTC also features an external battery backup supply input that allows the clock to continue to run even when the system power is removed, ensuring the clock will not lose its time setting.
The device includes an internal temperature-controlled oscillator (TCXO) to supplement the external clock signal. The temperature-compensated oscillator operates in the temperature range of 0 to 70°C. This allows the clock to maintain a reliable and high accuracy over the entire operating temperature range. Additionally, the RTC supports a wide range of oscillator frequencies and can be used for systems running at 5, 10 or 15MHz.
