The DS1302SN-16/T&R (Real-Time Clock) is a highly-integrated clock / calendar circuit providing an integral 3-wire bidirectional serial data port (SCL, SDA, and GND pins) to the host processor. The integrated timing functions are comparable to the accuracy of a crystal oscillator. This RTC is designed to provide Real-Time Clock (RTC) and calendar functionality, tracking date and time in both the 12 and 24 hour formats.
The Real-Time Clock (RTC) is used to keep accurate time even when a power outage or other interruption occurs. Similarly, the Calendar function can be used to keep track of the days of the year. This device is ideally suited for embedded applications such as automotive, ATMs, medical instruments and many other applications that require precision performance and high accuracy.
The DS1302SN-16/T&R integrates several system components into one package, such as an External Crystal Oscillator and an SRAM. This allows the device to achieve an accuracy of ±0.5 second per day. The timing accuracy of the device is also adjustable to ±5ppm, allowing for an even higher precision than other RTC solutions.
The DS1302SN-16/T&R features a 24-hour mode, and provides synchronization with the host system, such that clocks and timers can be automatically synchronized to the external system. The device also provides extended functions such as alarm and temperature monitoring. Furthermore, the DS1302SN-16/T&R supports hardware protection, preventing any unauthorized access to the data within the device.
This RTC supports a simple 3-wire bus interface, allowing easy integration with existing systems. The DS1302SN-16/T&R is able to draw power from the host system, or from an on-board battery, allowing for very low power consumption. Furthermore, the device only requires an external 32.768kHz crystal oscillator and capacitor to achieve its timekeeping accuracy.
The DS1302SN-16/T&R provides both a Stopwatch with a resolution of 0.25 second, and a Timer with a resolution of 0.5 second. These are useful for measuring lap times and for any applications that require timing accuracy. The timer functions can be set to start, restart, or stop based on the value of the second register.
The DS1302SN-16/T&R consumes very low current when in active mode, and is designed to operate over a wide range of temperatures.
