The DS1307Z+ Real Time Clock (RTC) is a low power, full binary-coded decimal (BCD) clock/calendar plus 56 bytes of NV SRAM. The device incorporates a battery input and maintains accurate timekeeping when main power to the device is interrupted. The clock/calendar provides seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information. The DS1307Z+ operates as a slave device to external microprocessors over an I2C bus. The device address is initially set to 01101001b but can be modified to any other 7-bit or 8-bit address.

The DS1307Z+ contains an external count circuit that permits an input signal to increment or decrement the seconds count to provide one-pulse-per-second (1PPS) accuracy. In addition, a combined programmable watchdog timer and square wave output device are integrated into the RTC. The watchdog timer is activated by either the external input signal exceeding a programmable time limit, or when the square wave output goes below a selectable level. The timer output is provided as a reset output that can be used to alert the host processor of any possible malfunction of the peripheral system.

The DS1307Z+ application fields are a great variety and can be found in domestic applications such as remote controls, audio and video equipment, PC clocks, watches, digital cameras and a variety of other applications. The device is also widely used in embedded systems such as medical equipment, robot and automobile applications, etc. The RTCs embedded in automotive systems, for instance, provide the data and time information onboard vehicles, monitoring system parameters such as door and window status, start and stop times, and other system events.

The DS1307Z+ working principle is based on a programmable oscillator and counter circuits. The oscillator is timed by a quartz crystal resonator; the oscillator output is transferred to a counter circuit, which divides by a factor of usually 8192 or 32768. The clock/calendar is derived from the output of the counter. The I2C serial interface is used to program the data and time information into the DS1307Z+. A combination of switches and pullups is provided so that multiple DS1307Z+ devices can be used on the same I2C bus without conflict.

The DS1307Z+ employs built-in power-fail detection and power-fail recovery features to ensure that chip contents are not lost during power failures. Power failure detection is accomplished by simple monitoring the voltage of the battery input pin. When the voltage drops below a certain level, the chip powers down and enters a low power consumption mode. When the battery voltage rises again, the power-fail detection logic overwrites the most recently stored data into internal non-volatile memory, ensuring that all data is recovered in case of a power failure.

The DS1307Z+ has several other features, including automatic daylight saving time adjustments, alarm capability, programmable output levels, and end of month alarm. The timekeeping accuracy can range from hundreds of milliseconds per month to a few milliseconds per month, depending on the accuracy of the crystal and power supply used. The clock can also be synchronized with an external atomic reference clock using a special synchronizing signal.

Overall, the DS1307Z+ Real Time Clock is a highly accurate clock/calendar plus NV SRAM device, ideal for a variety of applications.
