DS1371U+C01 application field and working principle

DS1371U+C01 is an advanced real time clock (RTC) developed specifically with low power operation in mind. With its low standby current and support for battery-backed timekeeping and date/time functionality, the device is perfect for battery powered and mobile applications. The device operates over a wide operating temperature range of -20°C to +70°C and is available in both lead-free (roHS compliant) and through-hole form factors. In combination with its ultra-low power consumption, the device is amazingly energy efficient.

The application fields of DS1371U+C01 mainly include wearable electronics, home appliances, battery operated medical devices, automotive, industrial automation/control applications, security, and IoT (Internet of Things). It can also be used as an independent RTC module in embedded systems. All of these applications take advantages of the device’s ultra-low power consumption and its accuracy.

The working principle of the DS1371U+C01 is based on a 32.768 kHz quartz crystal. Upon power-up the device initializes itself and then initiates regular clock oscillations which are used to count seconds, minutes, etc. The timekeeping data is stored in a DS1371U+C01’s non-volatile register such as the date, time and alarm registers. When the battery back up is lost, the chip defaults to a hardware reset and then re-initiates its clock oscillations.

The device also has built-in counter/timers, interrupts and interrupt sources to provide a wide range of timing and control options for the user. The counter/timers can be used for a variety of applications such as counting time or measuring frequency/periods of signals. The built-in interrupts and interrupt sources can be used to provide more accurate control in response to hall-effect, temperature and external pulse inputs.

The DS1371U+C01 also has features such as an on-chip watchdog timer, programmable alarms and power management enabling enhanced data security, schedule reminding and efficient power utilization. Furthermore, the chip also features an I2C serial interface compatible with a wide range of microcontroller architectures, PCB space is also largely reduced by incorporating the complex logic required by timekeeping and date/time functions into the same chip.

Finally, DS1371U+C01 makes it possible for devices to maintain accurate timekeeping functions even during discontinuous operation, suspension or power outages. As a result, developers are able to optimize the performance of their devices in terms of power utilization, clock accuracy and system control.
