The DS1673S-5+T&R features an on-chip power-sense circuit that automatically selects either an external crystal or a 32KHz oscillator as the device\'s timebase, depending on the power source. The flexibility of the DS1673S-5+T&R allows it to be used in a variety of time-keeping applications, such as metering and monitoring, automotive, industrial and medical applications.
In operation, the DS1673S-5+T&R employs a "dual mode" sensing architecture to read the temperature and humidity levels within the ambient environment. The relative humidity sensors consists of two elements, a hygroscopic cell, and a thermistor which measures temperature. The hygroscopic element releases and absorbs water vapor, resulting in a varying capacitance that is proportional to the relative humidity in the environment. The resulting capacitance is then compared to a temperature compensated slope, which is used to generate a digital relative humidity value.
The relative humidity sensor inside the DS1673S-5+T&R has a relative humidity sensing range of 20 - 90% with a nominal accuracy of ±3%. The temperature sensor inside the device has a temperature sensing range of -20°C to +80°C with a nominal accuracy of ±0.25°C, making it ideal for environmental monitoring, control, and data logging solutions.
The DS1673S-5+T&R also includes an on-chip microcontroller with a number of integrated memory locations that may be programmed to store user-defined parameters. The memory locations are used to store the time, date, and temperature data, as well as user-defined variables such as alarm and wake-up settings.
The DS1673S-5+T&R is equipped with an alarm function that can be set to trigger periodically, as well as alarming conditions detected by the temperature and humidity sensors. The alarm signals may be forwarded to a dedicated output pin, allowing for direct connection to external logic, allowing for flexible control options.
In addition, the DS1673S-5+T&R includes an input/output pin that is configurable as either a clock pulse or interrupt output. The device operates on an external 3V battery in a power-down mode for up to five years. Additionally, the device\'s integrated power-sense circuit automatically switches to an internal 32KHz oscillator when the power source is inadequate, allowing for continuous time-keeping in times of low power conditions.
