, “&ensp”“&emsp” Maxim Integrated’s DS1685-5 Real Time Clock (RTC) gives designers the ability to integrate a low-power, highly accurate and flexible time-keeping module into their application. DS1685-5 is available in an industry-standard 8-pin, DIP package with an integrated crystal and has a wide range of features to meet the requirements of the most demanding designs.  The main purpose of the DS1685-5 is to accurately track and report the time. The 81-bit architecture of the DS1685-5 provides greater accuracy than the standard 32-bit architecture of traditional RTCs. With this design, the accuracy of the timekeeping can be as precise as 1 second per day. The integrated crystal and on-chip oscillator eliminates the need for an external oscillator making it ideal for small form-factor designs where space is limited. The DS1685-5 also includes a power-on reset minimum/maximum timer (POR-MMT) which allows the application to track when a minimum/maximum number of seconds has passed since the last power-on reset. This feature is useful to ensure that critical tasks have been completed within a set amount of time and that time-outs have been avoided. The DS1685-5 is designed with an I2Cbus interface which allows the RTC time to be read and written by the application. The DS1685-5 also supports interrupts which can be used to notify the host system when an event occurs. The DS1685-5 can generate an interrupt for a variety of events such as when the interrupt timer expires, when the POR-MMT minimum/maximum number of seconds has been reached, or when there is an alarm event. The DS1685-5 also includes two alarms which can be used to generate an interrupt for a specific time of day or when a predefined number of days has been reached due to the DS1685-5’s feature of counting up to 999 days from the last power-on reset. The DS1685-5 also has a battery back-up feature which ensures that the timekeeping is accurate even when there is a power interruption. Overall, the DS1685-5 Real Time Clock module is a low-power, highly accurate and flexible time-keeping solution. Its 81-bit architecture and wide range of features make it well suited for applications that require accurate timing and reporting, such as industrial and medical equipment, home automation, and automotive applications. With its integrated crystal, I2C interface and battery back-up feature, the DS1685-5 can be used to easily and accurately track the time and report events to the host system.
