One of the most popular digital output temperature sensors is the DS18B20. This temperature sensor can detect temperatures from -55°C to +125°C with 9-12 bit precision over a 3-wire serial interface.

Working Principle

The DS18B20 provides temperature readings via a digital signal. This sensor has one 1-Wire input signal line. It must be connected to a power source (VCC) and ground (GND) before it can measure temperature. It can draw power directly from the data line, so only three connections are required to read temperatures.

Inside the DS18B20 is a thermometer with a sensitivity of 0.5°C. It includes a unique serial code stored in an onboard ROM that is used to identify the device. The DS18B20 measures the temperature and communicates the temperature data to the host controller by way of a single-bus interface.

When the host controller signals the DS18B20 to start a temperature conversion, the device begins to measure temperatures. It then sends the temperature information to the host in the form of digital data. The data is transmitted in a series of 8-bit bytes that can be read from the DQ (data out) pin.

The DS18B20 is able to return temperatures with resolutions of 9, 10, 11, and 12 bits, depending on the configuration. The device converts temperatures in 500 ms (12 bit resolution) to as fast as 8 ms (9 bit resolution) depending on the resolution. The accuracy of the temperatures achieved is ±0.5°C
