PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits) has been widely utilized for many industries. From consumer electronics to automotive field, PMICs have played a significant role in power management. One of the innovative solutions from PMIC that is gaining traction among nowadays electronic designs is DS2756E+T&R (Thermal Protection with SafeCell™ Technology), which is an integrated circuit designed to monitor and protect lithium ion (Li-Ion) and lithium polymer batteries.

This battery protection IC (BPI) provides several distinct functions to manage the entire charge and discharge process of Li-Ion/LiPo batteries. It provides users with the capability to monitor and manage single battery cell, multiple battery cells in series, and with its thermal protection feature, battery safety is further increased.

DS2756E+T&R Working Principle

This IC integrates many different features such as voltage monitoring, charging and discharging control, and Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) temperature sensing. Its main control circuit consists of a comparator, current control timer, voltage measurement circuit and update timer. Its protection circuit consists of an over-current detection circuit, which equipped with a single-time-delay output, and other protection circuits such as over-charge, over-discharge, short circuit, and over-temperature.

The voltage measurement circuit is mainly used for constant voltage and constant current charge, the charge limitvoltage of each cell and the total voltage of the mechanical series battery module. The update timer is used to periodically update the data such as voltage, charge current and temperature data stored in internal register.

The Over-current Detection Circuit

The over-current detection circuit is the main component of T&R feature. It is connected in parallel with the weak current sense coil and guards against current flow outside of the acceptable range. When it detects over-current or malfunction, this circuit will output a signal to the switch and then force it to turn off so that the current flow can be immediately blocked. The unique time-delay feature of this circuit must be remain enabled in most power management designs to ensure the system’s protection against sudden current overloads or short circuits.

The Control Circuit

The control circuit of DS2756E+T&R IC acts as the central core that coordinates multiple working modules to control the charge, discharge and safe-operation of Li-Ion/Li-Po battery systems. The controller uses the information from several sensors, such as voltage, current, temperature, and the environment, to determine the proper charging regulation.

The primary application of the control circuit is to manage the charge-discharge processes for Li-Ion/Li-Po battery system. It works to ensure the battery current does not exceed the prescribed charge/discharge limits in order to protect the battery from over-charging/discharge.
