The DS2703U+ is an advanced on-chip gas gauge, battery-pack monitor, protector, and balancer integrated circuit, which is specifically designed to support Li-ion batteries. With real-time capacity forecasting, low current, high accuracy, and wide temperature range operation, the DS2703U+ provides accurate fuel-gauge information, improves charging performance and increases battery system run-time to provide improved handheld and portable equipment usability.
The DS2703U+ is part of the Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) for Battery Management devices that support intelligent Battery Management System (BMS) devices. This design provides high flexibility in battery cell configuration and is designed to support a wide range of battery cell sizes and chemistry types. As part of the Power Management Infrastructure (PMI), it enables users to achieve an optimized charging system and prevent the critical conditions that could result in the battery being overcharged or deep discharged.
The working principle of the DS2703U+ is to measure the battery cell voltage, temperature, and current. The power management IC calculates the battery cell state of charge (SOC) and remaining capacity (remCap) in real-time based on user provided configuration information. The power management IC monitors and protect the battery cell terminals by providing a voltage reference linked to the battery pack. This voltage reference is used to monitor the battery cell terminal beginning with a low-current drawdown sense current.
The DS2703U+ features a time-to-empty (TTE) mode and a time-to-full (TTF) mode to extend the battery run-time by 20% in rechargeable batteries by using over-discharge protection and reconditioning algorithms that improve battery performance. The DS2703U+ also enables cell equalization during the charging process which helps to prevent cell imbalance and maximize cycle life. Additionally, this IC supports a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and an operating voltage range of 3V to 4.5V.
The DS2703U+ also features on-chip direct communication with an off-chip ADC to monitor the cell pack voltage, current, and temperature. This allows the user to directly read the ADC measurement as well as program the DS2703U+ to adjust the current, voltage, and temperature thresholds for protection and monitoring purposes. The DS2703U+ comes with embedded configuration registers allowing the user to configure different parameters such as charge and discharge end voltage, the inside device temperature, the leakage current and software lock.
The DS2703U+ is used in a variety of applications including laptop and notebook computers, tablets and smartphones, smart home devices, medical devices, automotive applications, and consumer electronics such as digital cameras and GPS. This power management IC is designed to provide reliable operation and low current consumption, making it an ideal choice for battery management applications requiring high performance and long run-time.
