Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) are essential components for any electronic device, including portable consumer electronics such as phones and laptops. An essential portion of a PMIC is the Battery Management. It is responsible for monitoring, regulating, and protecting the battery by providing charge and discharge current, safety cuts, and other necessary functions.

The DS2780G+ is an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) intended for use in secondary battery management systems. This PMIC provides a power path manager, fuel gauge, virtual disconnect, charging control, battery protection circuit and more in a single package. This PMIC integrates a variety of sophisticated functions to maximize efficiency while maintaining proper battery protection.

The DS2780G+ works by using several external components that work together to protect the battery and monitor its charging state. This includes an external battery charger, charge select MOSFET, a DC-DC converter, battery protection ICs, and temperature sensors. Additionally, it is powered by an external voltage source.

Once the external components have been installed, the DS2780G+ will then begin its functions. It will first begin by measuring the voltage and current of the battery to detect the low power or low discharge state and then begin adjusting the charge rate accordingly. Once the battery is properly charged, the DS2780G+ will then monitor the battery and its usage. Alternatively, it will detect when the battery is getting low and inform the device to begin conserving energy or warn the user to begin charging the battery.

The DS2780G+ also provides several safety features and protections. This includes over voltage protection, which will immediately turn off power to the battery and allow the voltage to drop back to its safe levels. Additional safety features include over temperature protection, mass storage protection, and more. This ensures the battery will be safe and reliable at all times.

The DS2780G+ is an ASIC specifically designed for battery management. It provides an efficient power management and battery protection in a single package. By utilizing an external voltage source, external charging components, and temperature sensors, it is able to accurately monitor, regulate, and protect the battery.
