Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, or aluminum electrolytics effectively consist of two aluminum foils, with an electrolyte set between them which acts as the dielectric. The electrolyte acts as an insulator between a positively and a negatively charged metal plate in the capacitor. It is these charged plates that produce the capacitor’s electromotive force (or electric field). The process is similar to that of two magnets with like charges weighing around each other.
