Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are electrochemical capacitors, generally small, which are characterized by their extremely high capacitance values, albeit at a higher equivalent series resistance (ESR) and equivalent series inductance (ESL) than other types of capacitor. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are generally composed of two aluminum foils (anode and cathode) separated by a synthetic paper soaked in electrolytic solution, and with its two contacts sealed. The anode is typically made of an aluminum foil with microscopic holes. The anode includes a preformed electrolyte that serves as the connector between the two aluminum foils. The structure of the capacitor is internal and the capacitor’s contacts are external, since the anode cannot be accessed from the exterior.
