EL7554IRE Application Field and Working Principle

EL7554IRE belongs to the family of DC-DC Switching Regulators which are used in the Power Management IC (PMIC) category. EL7554IRE is a 1A synchronous step-down regulator which can deliver up to 1A of output current, and provides high efficiency, output voltage accuracy, and low current consumption at light load. It offers wide input voltage range from 4V to 36V, with adjustable output voltage range from 0.6V up to 32V. It features internal soft-start, enable control, thermal protection, and output discharging circuit. It is available in a 10-Lead (3mm x 3mm) QFN package.

Working Principle

EL7554IRE works by controlling the duty cycle of an internal power switch. The power switch is an NMOS transistor which is combined with an inductor to form a basic switching converter. The synchronous rectification scheme is employed to reduce the power dissipation and assure efficiencies greater than 93%.

The chip monitors the output voltage, and establishes a digitally controlled duty cycle. To increase output voltage, the duty cycle of the power switch is reduced, whereas to decrease the output voltage it is increased. The switching frequency of the EL7554IRE is also adjustable from 300kHz to 1.2MHz.

The internal soft-start ramps up the output voltage gradually. It also has an enable control pin which can be used to turn off the device, and a thermal protection circuit which prevents the device from overheating. EL7554IRE also features a circuit which allows the user to discharge the output capacitor even when the device is shut off.
