Optoisolators are components which provide galvanic isolation between two electrical networks. It’s necessary to provide the isolation when the ground potential difference existing between two networks, otherwise electric current flows from one network to another network which can cause undesired influences and even destroy the system. One type of optoisolator is the EL817 (S1)(B)(TU)-G, which uses a Transistor, Photovoltaic Output to bridge circuits without allowing current flow between the two circuits.
The EL817 (S1)(B)(TU)-G is comprised of an infrared LED which is linked to the input side and a photodarlington transistor linked to the output side.
