Optoisolators, such as the EL817(S1)(C)(TD)-G, are optoelectronic components which provide electrical isolation between a driver and a receiver in its environment. It is commonly used in industrial control systems, audio lines, and telecommunications. It can also be used to safely isolate logic input, logic output, microcontroller I/O, and other circuits.

Working Principle of EL817(S1)(C)(TD)-G

The operation of EL817(S1)(C)(TD)-G optoisolator relies on the photovoltaic principle. An LED is built in the device which emits infrared light when electrically driven. This light is converted into electrical energy when received by the internal photodiode. This electrical energy is then converted into an output load by the phototransistoroutput stage.The output current is detected by the phototransistor and the current is converted to an electrical voltage. When the voltage level is higher than the cutoff level, the transistor will turn on and increase the load current. When the voltage level drops below the cutoff voltage, the phototransistor will turn off and reduce the load current.The maximum allowed input current is typically 10mA. By controlling the current through the LED, this allows control of the phototransistor, which in turn controls the load current.
