Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in a variety of electronic applications, from personal computers to consumer electronics, from communications to industrial automation. These capacitors provide the necessary electrical energy storage and value for voltage regulation, filtering, and buffering.

The ELXV100ELL103MM40S is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor designed for high temperature operation and low ESR (equivalent series resistance). This capacitor has a voltage rating of 100VDC and a working temperature range of -25°C to + 85°C. It has a capacitance value of 103µF ± 20% and a maximum ESR of 0.37Ω at 100kHz.

The ELXV100ELL103MM40S application field covers a wide range, such as power electronics, cooling fan control circuits, EV/HEV systems, voltage stabilizers, high power automotive lighting systems, etc. This is a miniature-sized, waterproof-forced, low-ESR, high-temperature aluminum electrolytic capacitor with long-term reliable performance for high-temperature automotive applications.

The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on Faraday's law of electrolysis, wherein a thin oxide layer is formed on the surface of the aluminum anode through an electrochemical process. As a result, the aluminum anode and the electrolyte form a dielectric layer, which acts as a capacitor and isolates the anode from the electrolyte. This layer is used to store energy when a voltage is applied. As the voltage increases, the dielectric layer becomes thicker and stores more energy.

When a voltage is applied to the terminals of the capacitor, a separation of charge occurs between the anode and the electrolyte, resulting in the creation of an electric field. The electric field polarizes the electric dipoles in the electrolyte and induces a current in the circuit. This current generates a magnetic field that affects the capacitance of the capacitor.

The working principle of aluminum electrolytic capacitors makes them ideal for applications such as power supply filtering, decoupling, signal buffering, and capacitor discharge. The main disadvantage of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is that they have a low DC leakage, which means that only a limited amount of energy can be stored. As a result, they are not suitable for applications that require high voltage or long-term power storage.
