Working Principle
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are generally constructed of an anode aluminum foil, an electrolyte, a dielectric oxide film, and a cathode foil, which is typically made from aluminum. It also has a low equivalent series resistance (ESR), allowing it to provide improved power efficiency in various applications.
When a voltage is applied across the capacitor, current flows from the anode to the cathode and electrons migrate from the cathode foil to the anode foil, forming a space-charge region. This region stores energy as a result of the electrons that have been displaced from the anode. The electric field across the capacitor is made up of these two oppositely charged fields, resulting in the capacitor’s capacitance. The capacitor’s capacitance directly relates to the area of the anode foil, the distance between the two foils, and the dielectric thickness.
