Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, also known as “polarized electrolytic capacitors,” are widely used, and have been for many years, in all classes of electronic equipment, across all voltage ratings and temperature ranges. They are generally composed of an aluminum anodic body, an electrolyte (liquid or solid) and a titanium foil plate, making them strong, reliable and durable.
The ERWE401LGC682MEF5M (hereafter referred to as the “ERWE”) is a tubular aluminum electrolytic capacitor manufactured by Murata and is designed for use in high voltage equipment. It has a rated voltage of 500 volts and a capacitance value of 6.8uF. It also features an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.
Application Field of the ERWE
The ERWE is suitable for a wide variety of applications. Due to its high voltage and temperature ratings, it is mainly used in high voltage inverters, solar inverters, UPS systems, and motor drives. It is also suitable for being used in power supplies and other AC circuit applications, as well as in RF electrode circuits and DC powered control applications.
Working Principle of the ERWE
The working principle of the ERWE is based on the electrochemical behavior of the galvanic cells and electrolytic solution while the capacitor is in operation. The galvanic cell converts the electrical potential into a form of energy that can then be stored and released in the form of voltage. The electrolyte provides the conductivity needed to allow for the formation of the galvanic cell as well as enabling ions to move.
The ERWE features a non-solid electrolyte solution, which helps to provide a higher level of capacitance. It uses a thin oxide layer formed on the anodic aluminum foil, providing a very low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and long service life. The oxide layer is further protected by the electrolyte which acts as an insulating barrier in between the anodic and cathodic layers.
When the ERWE capacitor is subjected to an applied voltage, ions in the electrolyte solution experience an electrical force, which causes them to divide. These ions travel through the electrolyte solution and deposit on the anodic foil, creating an electrostatic field which acts as a barrier against the flow of electrons. Under this field, the electrons and ions accumulate and form capacitance, thereby storing energy.
