The EVAL-AD7651CBZ is one of the most advanced analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) that are available in the market today. It is part of Analog Devices’ high-performance data conversion family of evaluation boards and provides a comprehensive set of features and a greater level of accuracy and flexibility than comparable devices. This evaluation board is designed for a wide range of applications, such as energy harvesting, acoustic and ultrasonic sensing, and medical imaging systems. This article aims to explain the application field of the EVAL-AD7651CBZ and discuss its working principle.The EVAL-AD7651CBZ evaluation board is designed for a variety of applications requiring low-power, high-accuracy A/D conversion including medical imaging systems, battery-powered systems, acoustic and ultrasonic sensing systems, and others. The board is capable of sampling up to 24 bits at data rates of up to 25 megasamples per second (MSPS). It features a low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) data interface that allows for fast, low-noise data transfers to a host controller or a digital-signal-processor (DSP). Additionally, the board has a temperature sensor and a low-dropout voltage regulator (LDO) that allow for accurate power regulation and temperature monitoring.The EVAL-AD7651CBZ has an on-chip analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that converts an analog input signal into a digital output signal represented by a 24-bit words. It has a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) with an adjustable gain ranging from 0.39 to 128 dB, which means that a wide range of input signal levels can be accepted. In addition, the board includes a post-processing block which can perform high-pass, low-pass, or band-pass filtering, as well as sample-rate conversion. The EVAL-AD7651CBZ operates with a power supply ranging from 2.7 V to 5.5 V and dissipates a maximum of 0.9 W of power. It is provided with two single-ended input and two single-ended output pins that accept input signals up to 5.3 V. The EVAL-AD7651CBZ also has a two-wire I2C interface, enabling communication with an external controller or processor.The EVAL-AD7651CBZ employs a high-speed pipeline architecture consisting of a built-in programmable gain amplifier (PGA) followed by the ADC core which consists of three sub-blocks. The first sub-block is a track-and-hold circuit which captures and stores the analog input signal at the desired sampling rate. The second sub-block is a digital-to-analog converter which converts the analog signal into a digital one. Finally, the third sub-block is the analog-to-digital converter, which converts the digital signal into a 24-bit word. The EVAL-AD7651CBZ offers the possibility of selecting either a multi-bit oversampling approach, giving the best dynamic range performance, or a block-by-block interpolation mode to reduce the power dissipation.The EVAL-AD7651CBZ is a highly flexible evaluation board which can be used in a variety of applications. Its multi-bit oversampling approach enables high-precision data conversion, and its low-power consumption, makes it the ideal choice for battery-powered applications. Additionally, it provides a simple ease of configuration and a wide range of features such as a programmable gain amplifier, post-processing block and temperature sensor.
