Analog to digital converters (ADCs) are widely used in many applications and can have significant impacts on the performance of a system. The popular Altera EVAL-AD7660EDZ evaluation board is an indispensable tool for evaluating, designing, and testing analog-to-digital conversions. This board is based on the Analog Devices AD7660 high performance 16-bit CMOS analog-to-digital converter and includes a convenient reference design featuring input conditioning Amplifier1, optional input filters, ADC offset adjust, power regulator, on-board D/A for system loop-back testing, and a high-speed serial interface.

The working principle of the EVAL-AD7660EDZ evaluation board is based on the AD7660 16-bit 6μs settling time Analog-to-Digital Converter. This ADC has a selectable 8-bit or 16-bit resolution, 8MHz sampling rate, and an integrated programmable gain amplifier. Its architecture features a CMOS track-and-hold amplifier, reference buffer, low power design, integrated digital filters, and on-chip programmable gain amplifier.
The CMOS track-and-hold amplifier on the EVAL-AD7660EDZ board is ideal for eliminating signal distortion caused by finite input circuit bandwidth and settling time. The AD7660 offers low distortion of -78dBc for an 8MHz input signal, excellent ENOB performance of 13.5 bits at 8MS/s, and high SNR of 77dB.
The reference buffer provides a stable, low-noise reference voltage, 2.56V, to the AD7660, eliminating the need for an external reference voltage for the ADC. The reference buffer also includes an internal 5ppm/°C reference temperature stability for accurate temperature compensation.
The low power architecture of the AD7660 delivers up to 4mW of power consumption, allowing for longer battery life, while still achieving high sampling rates. The ADC also includes an integrated programmable gain amplifier (PGA) that can be adjusted from 0 to 4 times the input voltage range with 0.5x resolutions. This allows the user to adjust the gain for different application needs.
An on-chip (I2C) serial port is also provided for control of the ADC and the optional integrated digital filters. The filters provide enhanced signal fidelity over wide dynamic range as the number of filter stages increases. The digital filters are programmable to different filter setting parameters such as corner frequency (fc), 3rd-order Butterworth filter, and filter order (n).
