Among the most important type of evaluation boards are Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs). The EVAL-AD7682EDZ is a precision SAR ADC evaluation board, designed to evaluate the features of the AD7682 16-bit, 250kHz SAR ADC from Analog Devices.

The embedded microcontroller runs the firmware, and provides data acquisition and communication functions. The firmware provides essential functions, such as a 16level voltage divider, multiplexer, low-pass filter, digital filter and other supporting peripheral devices. It also provides a user interface to interact with the ADC via the SPI bus, providing a variety of control options for the ADC including different output data formats, selectable track/hold bandwidth, offset calibration, input and output range settings, and other features such as operating frequency and I/O speed.
The data acquisition system of the EVAL-AD7682EDZ features a 16-bit microcontroller with over 128kB of Flash memory, 512kB of RAM, and 32kB of EEPROM. The EVAL-AD7682EDZ provides an isolated environment for the ADC, allowing for direct connection of the ADC to any signal to be evaluated. The ADC is operated through an SPI bus interface, and data collected by the ADC is transferred to host application via either PC or standalone operation.
The working principle of the EVAL-AD7682EDZ relies on the successful conversion of analog signals to digital using the ADC’s successive approximation register. The ADC converts a differential input signal into a single, 16bit digital word with a resolution of up to 24bits (through oversampling).
