The sensing community today has access to a wide range of sensor technologies, from proximity/IR sensors to chemical and biological sensors, all of which have been enabled by progress in integrated circuit (IC) technology over the past several decades. Of particular interest for many applications today is the successful development of semiconductor packaging and integrated circuit structures to measure physical parameters such as acceleration, temperature, pressure, humidity, and magnetic fields in a reliable, compact, low-power, lightweight, and cost-effective manner. A good example of this technology is the “Evaluation Board for Accelerometer ADXL212Z”.
The EVAL-ADXL212X type of accelerometer operates on a capacitive sensing principle, meaning it detects changes in capacitance resulting from acceleration or changes in orientation. A single chip IC contains microscopic sense capacitors, which are arranged in a differential configuration. The two sense capacitors are separated by a rigid suspension. When an acceleration is applied to the device, the cantilever system vibrates, causing a change in the capacitance of the two sense capacitors. This change is what allows the accelerometer to measure acceleration.
The EVAL-ADXL212Z uses two common axis for sensing and provides a digital output in the form of an analog voltage, as well as a digital signal for outputting acceleration data via the integral I2C/I3C interface. The EVAL-ADXL212X can measure up to ±2 g of acceleration, with a resolution of the order of tens of micro G (10-6 G). Its on-chip temperature compensation feature assures that it will work accurately under a wide range of temperatures.
The EVAL-ADXL212Z evaluation board offers a great deal of flexibility for use in various applications. Using the included evaluation software and graphical user interface (GUI), the user can configure the board to measure acceleration in either of the two planes, as well as the rate of deceleration or acceleration. The user can then access the data by connecting to the board using the USB port.
The EVAL-ADXL212Z can be used in a variety of applications, including but not limited to industrial, automotive, medical, consumer, and military/aerospace. For industrial applications, the board can be used to measure vibration and shock levels, as well as to monitor the speed of motors, pumps, and other machineries. In the automotive industry, the EVAL-ADXL212X board can be utilized for airbag deployment and brake system monitoring, as well as for evaluating the acceleration and rollover of vehicles.
In medical applications, the board can be used for gait and motion analysis, as well as for assessing the rehabilitation of individuals who have endured traumatic brain injuries or strokes. For consumer applications, it can provide motion input for gaming systems, as well as monitor the motion of phones, portable computers, and other consumer electronics for enhanced control.
The EVAL-ADXL212X board offers a simple and efficient way to integrate capacitive sensing technology into any design, allowing the user to accurately measure acceleration in a wide range of applications.
