The EVAL-ST95HF evaluation and development kit enables users to explore the features of ST95HF tags used in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) applications. Featuring a number of key components including an STM32 microcontroller, an ST95HF device, and an antenna, it provides a comprehensive test and development platform for RFID systems. A primary component of the EVAL-ST95HF is the microcontroller, which is responsible for controlling the RFID reader and communication link between the reader and tag. The microcontroller is based on an ARM Cortex-M3 core and contains a large selection of peripherals including USB, UART, and SPI interfaces. The other components of the kit include a demo board, ST95HF-IC to the reader antenna, and a PCB antenna. The demo board provides a platform for implementation and testing of different RFID protocols and applications.
Working Principle
The ST95HF tag and reader work in concert to perform various RFID operations. Using an antenna, the reader sends out a signal that is interpreted by thetag, after which the tag responds accordingly. The data that the tag sends back to the reader is dependent on the command sent by the reader, which can consist of write, read, lock, unlock, or kill commands.
An example of this process is in the case of an authentication request. The reader sends an authentication request containing a secret password to the tag. If the password matches the secret password stored in the RFID tag, the tag grants the reader access to the data stored within the tag’s memory. The reader is then able to read and write data from the tag in accordance with the commands it sends. Additionally, the tag can have security measures put in place to prevent false authentication attempts.
Besides authentication, the EVAL-ST95HF can also be used for testing anti-collision algorithms and range of communication. Typically, RFID readers can communicate with multiple tags at the same time; anti-collision algorithms are used to distinguish between two tags with same identification number. Anti-collision algorithms makes sure that two tags do not respond at the same time, and thus, communication between the tag and reader is more efficient. Finally, the evaluation kit can also be used to test the communicationrange of the reader. Depending on the environment, the range of communication can range from a few centimeters to up to several meters.
