The EVAL6599-400W-T is an evaluation board that was specifically designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the MC33164 IC from ON semiconductor. This board is part of the evaluation boards in the DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS category. In this article, the application field and working principle of the EVAL6599-400W-T will be discussed.The EVAL6599-400W-T was designed with an application field in mind: applications that require a low cost AC/DC design such as appliances, lighting, and other applications where short-term backup power is needed. The evaluation board includes the components necessary to evaluate the performance of the MC33164 IC in terms of efficiency, load regulation, transient response, and other applications and parametric tests.The EVAL6599-400W-T includes two different power modules, the conventional power module and the secondary power module. The power module includes a rectifier section and a power amplifier section. The rectifier section is used to convert the AC voltage to the DC voltage required in the application. The power amplifier section is used to boost the voltage. Both sections are controlled by an active power factor control circuitry that ensures optimal power conversion efficiency.The MC33164 IC is the heart of the EVAL6599-400W-T evaluation board. This IC integrates all the necessary functions to operate the power section, including protection circuitry, pulse width modulation (PWM) controller, and error amplifier. It also integrates a high frequency transformer driver which enables the use of larger output power without requiring large transformers or inductors. The IC integrates a low start-up current peak which reduces the power consumed at startup drastically. The design of the EVAL6599-400W-T allows the application of the IC to different scenarios. With its constant on-time control scheme, the evaluation board can be used to design constant voltage power supplies, low power applications, audio amplifiers and other applications. It can also be used to design controlled switching systems with short turn-on and off times. The EVAL6599-400W-T evaluation board was designed to simplify the evaluation process for the user. It includes six separate single-setting potentiometers for the adjustment of main parameters. It also includes a PC interface for monitoring and controlling the application. The board includes a Thermal Image Capture Board and a Thermal Image Viewer Software for unrivalled thermal evaluation performance. The EVAL6599-400W-T is an extremely versatile evaluation board that allows designers to evaluate the performance of the MC33164 IC in different applications and scenarios. Its high power efficiency, low start-up current, and active power factor control make it ideal for AC/DC applications that require low cost design and short-term backup power.
