FAN5066MX: an Application Field and Working Principle Overview
The FAN5066MX is a 45V to -12V, 2A synchronous buck controller for automotive applications. The Operating Principles of the FAN5066MX
The FAN5066MX is a synchronous buck controller optimized for use with an N-Channel MOSFET. It works based on a two-step process that is modulated by a variable frequency oscillator.
The first step of the process is the generation of a current threshold that powers two internal comparators, referred to as Current Sense (CS) and Power Sense (PS). The cs switch is activated when the current flow in the inductor approaches the desired output current, turning off the power switch in the MOSFET. The PS switch is enabled when the voltage on the output capacitor is close to target, thus turning off the power switch on the MOSFET, and also adjusting the oscillator frequency for a fixed frequency of operation.
The second step is the actual switch control, i.e. turning the FET on and off. This is done by the synchronous rectifier, which is activated by the oscillator and it creates a synchronizing pulse that has a voltage that is high enough to turn off the FET. For each high or low voltage cycle, the pulse width is varied depending on the configuration of the current low, Over-Voltage, Soft-Start and Power profile settings.
The various current limits, Over-Voltage, Soft-Start and Power profiles, allow for improved design flexibility. A higher current limit allows for more power to pass from the input voltage to the output voltage. The Over-Voltage setting limits the power switch on voltage, preventing any damage to the device due to excessive voltage. The Soft-Start setting controls the rise-time of the output voltage, allowing for power-up without inrush current on the output capacitor.
Finally, the Power profile feature allows the user to easily switch the device between two operating modes: DC Mode or Burst Mode. The DC mode provides a continuous voltage output, while the Burst mode reduces power draw while maintaining the output voltage, making it ideal for applications that demand improved power savings.
