Because the output current is proportional to the applied voltage and inversely proportional to the temperature, the FR604 can be utilized for voltage regulation.

In the reverse bias condition, the electric field created by the voltage tends to pull the free charges away from the pn-junction and the applied voltage decreases until the electric field reaches an equilibrium. This equilibrium dictates the breakdown voltage of the device and allows for an increased amount of current to flow. The breakdown voltage also makes the FR604 suitable for use as a protective device against transients or other high-voltage events.
