The FR604 is a type of diode rectifier that is frequently used in applications such as power rectification and voltage regulation. It is designed as a single, three-terminal device with a primary anode (A), a cathode (K) and a gate terminal (G).
The FR604 has a maximum forward current rating of 6 Amps and a maximum forward voltage drop of 1.5V. The reverse current leakage is typically less than 5µA, and the thermal resistance at junction to case is usually 10 deg.C/W. It is a commonly used device to provide protection from excessive current or reverse voltages.
The FR604 is a two-layer diode whose operating principle is based on a pn-junction. It is essentially a non-linear resistor whose output current is related to input voltage by the voltage-current characteristic. When the anode is forward biased with respect to the cathode, the pn-junction will become conducting and current will flow. This is known as the forward bias condition. When the anode is reverse biased with respect to the cathode, the pn-junction becomes reverse biased and current flow is restricted. This is known as the reverse bias condition.
In the forward bias condition, the FR604 operates by creating an electric field in the pn-junction which causes an amount of current to flow into the anode. This current flow is limited by the series resistance created by the device’s junction capacitance and the other parameters affecting its performance such as the temperature and applied voltage. Because the output current is proportional to the applied voltage and inversely proportional to the temperature, the FR604 can be utilized for voltage regulation.
In the reverse bias condition, the electric field created by the voltage tends to pull the free charges away from the pn-junction and the applied voltage decreases until the electric field reaches an equilibrium. This equilibrium dictates the breakdown voltage of the device and allows for an increased amount of current to flow. The breakdown voltage also makes the FR604 suitable for use as a protective device against transients or other high-voltage events.
