Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT or GTCA28-201M-R05) are a type of surge arrester used for protecting power systems and electronics from electrical surges, such as those resulting from lightning. These devices protect against the destructive energy that can be caused by lightning strikes, power switching transients, and other overvoltage events. They are designed to intervene before the surge can cause damage, diverting and discharging the energy in a safe manner. The GTCA28-201M-R05 is a Type 2 Class C arrester that is designed for application in IT systems, oil and gas production systems, commercial buildings, process control systems, and other location that require medium levels of surge protection. It is constructed from two separate tubes, which consist of a spark tube and a 12mm. glass tube containing 10 discharging chambers, filled with SF6 gas. This gas is the main element of a GDT, and helps to reduce the breakdown voltage of the GDT.
When an overvoltage occurs, the spark tube is struck by the surge and conducts electricity at a low voltage so that it can be quickly and safely dissipated. The surge then passes through the spark tube and into the glass tube, where it passes through the 10 discharge chambers. The surge is then discharged through the ceramic electrodes at the end of the tube. This process reduces the surge\'s voltage and energy level until it is safe for the equipment. The GTCA28-201M-R05 also utilizes a short circuit current limiting device, which helps in the safe discharge of the surge energy.
The GTCA28-201M-R05 operates in a temperature range of –40°C to +65°C and is designed to handle up to a 100 kA surge current (5/50 μs). It is capable of withstanding up to 6 kA of short circuit current and is UL listed, making it a safe and reliable choice for surge protection.
