Gas discharge tube arrester (GDT) are an important component in substation protection scheme which provide protection to power system equipments from overvoltage. GDTs are electronic protection devices which functions by blocking or diverting high voltage surges caused by lightning ending. The GDT\'s also provide low impedance currents paths to the ground and thereby eliminate hazardous voltages. The GTCA28-351M-R20 are the most widely used type of Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT).

The construction of the GTCA28-351M-R20 can be categorized into two sections, namely the main body and the accessory parts. The main body consists of a zinc oxide element that provides the surge diversion capability, a ceramic spacer which acts as a high energy barricade which isolates the main body from the mounting directly, two spring-style electrodes, and an insulated plastic housing.
