Optoisolators are devices used to electrically isolate two sections of a circuit to prevent potential harm caused by current or voltage leakage between them. The optoisolator is designed with a semiconductor light source, such as a LED, and an insulated photovoltaic cell, such as a phototransistor or photodiode, placed in a package. The LED is wired to the input side of the optoisolator, and the photovoltaic cell is wired to the output side of the device.

The H11B13SD optoisolator is a transistor, photovoltaic output isolation device designed to provide high-speed, digital isolation between signal and power sections. The H11B13SD optoisolator contains a GaAs infrared LED with a peak emission wavelength of 940nm and a phototransistor output. A maximum collector-emitter voltage of 30Vdc reduces the noise caused by ringing generated during switching. The H11B13SD is also designed with a large CTR to reduce power consumption, providing up to a 3.0mA base current and 30mW output power when used with a 3.3V supply.

The H11B13SD optoisolator works on the concept of a photon, which in this case is an infrared light. When a voltage is applied to the LED, electrons move throughout the LED’s semiconductor, creating a photon, which is emitted. The photon moves at the speed of light and passes through the optocoupler’s insulation layer, which helps to reduce leakage currents and ensure a safe electrical isolation between the signal source and the output. Once the photon reaches the phototransistor, the phototransistor absorbs the energy from the photon and creates an electrical current. This current is used as the optoisolator’s output signal.

The H11B13SD optoisolator is designed for high speed digital isolation applications requiring up to 30V of protection. This optoisolator is ideal for electrical bridge circuits, power controllers and energy conversion, and can be used with a variety of power supply requirements, including 3.3V, 5V, 12V, 24V and 48V. The H11B13SD optoisolator is also widely used in signal and power circuit isolation, communication transceivers and Ethernet modules, as well as for frequency and pulse signal amplification.
