Optoisolators, also known as opto-isolators, are devices used for galvanic isolation of electrical circuits and systems. They are employed to allow two or more circuits to exchange data and power without being electrically connected, thus preventing unexpected currents from flowing between the circuits which may cause damage or interference. One such type of optoisolator is the H11B3S1(TB)-V, a transistor-photovoltaic output optoisolator.

The H11B3S1(TB)-V is a 3-terminal optoisolator in which an LED on the input side generates a light signal which, in turn, is used to activate a photovoltaic transistor on the output side. The optical link between the two components provides a galvanic isolation of at least 100V, making it an ideal solution for applications requiring isolation in both directions of power and/or communication such as in instrumentation, motor control, industrial automation, control systems, etc. Additionally, the optoisolator is suitable for use in the presence of extreme environmental conditions due to its high dielectric strength rating (UL94-V0).

The H11B3S1(TB)-V optoisolator has a wide input voltage range from 4.2V to 32V, and a maximum output current of 500mA allowing it to be employed in a variety of applications including microcontroller interfacing and isolated AC and DC motor controls. The maximum power dissipation of this device is 500mW.

The basic working principle of the H11B3S1(TB)-V optoisolator is as follows: The LED on the input side emits a light signal which is used to activate the photovoltaic transistor on the output side. This in turn generates a current across the transistor, which is proportional to the intensity of the light emitted by the LED, allowing the circuit to exchange data and power without direct electrical contact. Additionally, because of the galvanic isolation provided by the optoisolator, any sudden changes in the input current cannot affect the output circuit, resulting in improved reliability of the system.
