Jumper Wires

Jumper wires are short lengths of wire with exposed metal pins at both ends. Although they are mainly used in electronics as a way to connect two points on a circuit board or in bread boarding, they can also be used in many other applications.

Jumper wires are held in place on a circuit board by soldering and can be modified in the event of a problem or even shortened if necessary. The pins on the wires are usually color coded, making it easy to identify which type of wire each wire is and which end connects to which point on the board.

Jumper wires are made of different materials, including copper, gold, and plastic. Copper is the most commonly used material for jumper wires as it is a good conductor of electricity. Gold is also used, though it is more expensive and not as effective a conductor.

Pre-Crimped Leads

Pre-crimped leads are an alternative to jumper wires, allowing for a more permanent and secure connection between two points on a circuit board.

Unlike jumper wires, pre-crimped leads are designed to be heat-resistant and can withstand higher temperatures, allowing for more robust connections. This makes them ideal for more reliable and long-term applications.

Pre-crimped leads are also easier to work with, as they come with pre-crimped pins which make connections faster and simpler. They are also more robust, as the construction of the lead ensures that it will maintain its integrity when it comes into contact with heat.

The pins on pre-crimped leads are also color-coded in the same way that jumper wires are. This makes it easier to determine which type of wire each wire is and the orientation of the pin on the board.

Working Principle

The working principle of jumper wires and pre-crimped leads is essentially the same. Once the pin is inserted into the pre-set hole on the board, a small circuit is formed and current is able to flow through the wire.

The difference with pre-crimped leads is that the pins are better able to maintain their position and secure the connection between two points on the board, thanks to the heat-resistant construction of the lead.

Both methods of wiring are useful for connecting complex circuits, though pre-crimped leads offer the additional benefit of being more reliable in the long-term and more easily manipulated if necessary.
