It relies on the use of a light-emitting diode (LED) to optically couple a circuit or part of a circuit for electrical isolation. Transistor optoisolators are one of the types of optoisolators. They use a photovoltaic output to directly or indirectly drive a transitor load. The HMHA2801BR3 is a photorelay optoisolator from Renesas, specifically in the Transistor, Photovoltaic Output category. This device, with a very on-state output current and very ultra low activation-current (down to 100nA), helps improve robustness and a reliable drive circuit. It is especially suitable for driving high capacitive loads, and can be applied across a broad range of household and industrial electronic appliances. Its characteristic features include low forward voltage drop, low permittivity, long operating lifetime, and fast switching speeds.The inner circuitry of this optoisolator consists of a gallium arsenide (GaAs) LED which is used as a light source, a photo detector whose sensitivity has been optimized for the LED, and a high-gain bipolar transistor drive circuit. The photo diode is coupled to the LED for current purpose and also contributes to effective electrical isolation. The bipolar transistor acts as the driver, driving the output load with current or voltage, depending on the application field.The basic operation principle of HMHA2801BR3 is quite simple. Through the polarization of the LED, the input signal current results to the emitting of photons. These photons get transferred to the photo diode, inducing the generation of electron holes within the photo detector, and then the input current will cause the generation a current to activate the BJT. This current flow will activate the transistor, which will switch the output and drive the load. When the input current is switched off, the output turns off immediately. The overall product has anI/O isolation voltage of 5000Vrms, a Isolation test voltage of 8.3kVrms, and and a Rated input voltage of 12V to 48V. The maximum output current is 100mA, while the operating temperature range is between -40°C to +105°C. mHHA2801BR3 can be employed as an electronic interface in various power management, power supply, monitor, switch, and remote control applications.In conclusion, the HMHA2801BR3 optoisolator is easy to use and fits for various application fields.
