Evaluation and Demonstration Boards and Kits are tools which developers use to device, debug and evalulate embedded designs like microcontrollers, sensors and many more. Such boards and kits can also perform functions of prototyping and validation of drivers and applications in an embedded system.
One such evaluation and demonstration board is the IRPLCFL4 Board. It is an 8-bit microcontroller board based on Atmel’s AVR family that is comparable in size to a 3.5” disk drive and is suitable for prototyping, small system building, student experiments etc. It has an integrated interface for programming and debugging.
The IRPLCFL4 board comes with a 64k SDRAM, 8k EPROM, RTC and 32 I/O pins which are all pre-programmed by Atmel making it easier to make a useful program in a small amount of time. It also has an EXTRA connector to add more boards for user-expandable applications.
The IRPLCFL4 board has a variety of application fields due to its powerful features. Its on-board UARTs and SPI ports allow it to be used for communication-related applications. With ADC and DAC facilities, it can be used for signal conditioning. Its EEPROM memory can be used for data logging. For wireless communication, a Bluetooth or ZigBee module can be attached and for controlling external environment, servo motors can be connected via PWM ports. Other possibilities include making a voice recorder, robotics, embedded system programming and much more.
The working principle of the IRPLCFL4 board is simple and straightforward. With the help of its integrated programming and debugging interface, the board will accept object code that is generated for an AVR MCU from a C program. This object code will then be transferred to the board via its 12-P program header or via the JTAG connector using compatible programming tools. Once the object codes are loaded onto an IRPLCFL4 board, they run just like a MCU that is programmed on a traditional hardware platform.
The IRPLCFL4 board has a wide range of applications in embedded systems due to its powerful features and user-expandability. Its working principle is simple and straightforward allowing developers to get the most out of the board.
