Evaluation Boards - LED Drivers - IRPLLED1 Application Field And Working Principle
LED drivers have become ubiquitous in a variety of applications that utilize Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology. LEDs are commonly used for illuminating displays in consumer electronics and for providing illumination for a variety of other applications. LED drivers enable the effective management of the LED’s current, voltage and power levels.
The IRPLLED1 evaluation board is a LED driver from International Rectifier (IR). This board includes an integrated LED driver IC, called the IR3214PBF. This LED driver IC is designed for driving constant-current LED strings up to ten LEDs in series, with a maximum total string voltage of up to 36V. The board is supplied with two output current channels which are user adjusted via onboard resistors.
The IR3214PBF LED driver IC consists of two 600kHz DC/DC converters. The two channels are configured in a synchronous powered buck topology. This means that the two channels can share a common power input, although they can also be driven by a separate power input. The output current of each channel can be adjusted by setting the value of a series resistor, R_SET. There is also a sense resistor, R_SNS, in series with the LED string. This resistor is utilized for monitoring of line voltage and for adjusting channel current.
The logic interface of the IR3214PBF is compatible with various logic control languages such as SMI and SMI-Direct, as well as a PWM and stepped brightness control. Additionally, the board can be operated in dimming, burst and normal operation modes. Logic inputs/outputs are internally pulled up/down to +5V or GND.
The IRPLLED1 can be used in a variety of applications, depending on the user’s requirements. It can be used for lighting applications in automotive, consumer electronics, medical and industrial areas. Other applications include display lighting, backlighting and decoration lighting.
The IRPLLED1 evaluation board is a reliable LED driver with many features such as on-board LED sensing and LED open/short circuit protection. The board is relatively easy to set up, and can be operated in a variety of ways. Its features make it suitable for a number of illumination applications.
